Big Ambitions supports mods through the Steam Workshop, with no separate mod loader required for the official route. Subscribe on the Workshop, launch the game, and enable installed mods from the main menu when required. Treat blueprints separately: they are interior designs installed through an in-game interior installation firm, not general gameplay mods.

How to install a Big Ambitions Workshop mod

  1. Close Big Ambitions before changing a mod set.
  2. Open the Big Ambitions Steam Workshop.
  3. Read the item's description, required game version, dependencies, known conflicts, and recent comments.
  4. Select Subscribe on the item page.
  5. Let Steam finish downloading the Workshop content.
  6. Start Big Ambitions and open the mod controls from the main menu.
  7. Enable the new mod if the author says it must be enabled.
  8. Test it in a separate save before loading a long-running company.

The integrated system arrived with official mod support and an in-game upload path for creators. This is why an old guide that begins with a third-party DLL injector or manual replacement of game files is not the normal 1.0 installation method.

Mods and blueprints are different

Mods

Mods can change behavior, add assets, or alter systems. They may declare dependencies and can stop working after a game update. The main-menu mod controls determine whether a subscribed mod is active.

Blueprints

Blueprints are shared interior layouts. After subscribing, install a compatible blueprint through an interior installation firm in the game. You still need a suitable property and enough money for the listed furniture and installation. A blueprint does not bypass capacity, business-type, or item requirements.

If a Workshop page does not clearly say which type it is, use its category, description, and installation instructions before assuming it will appear in a save.

Safe way to test a new mod

Use this order for a valuable save:

  1. Confirm that Steam Cloud or your normal save backup has finished.
  2. Make a separate manual save before enabling anything new.
  3. Subscribe to one mod at a time.
  4. Start a disposable test save or duplicate save first.
  5. Check loading, saving, travel, business panels, inventory, and any system the mod changes.
  6. Exit and reload the test save to confirm the modified state persists.
  7. Only then open the primary company save.

This process does not guarantee safety, but it isolates failures and makes it much easier to identify the responsible item.

Compatibility checks before subscribing

  • Game version: look for a current 1.0 compatibility statement or recent author update.
  • Dependencies: subscribe to required Workshop items before the main mod.
  • Conflicts: avoid combining two mods that replace the same system unless both authors say they are compatible.
  • Load assumptions: follow any enable order or new-save requirement written by the author.
  • Recent reports: distinguish unresolved error reports from comments about older game versions.
  • Removal warning: do not remove a mod mid-save if the author says its data is persistent.

Steam hosting is a distribution channel, not a guarantee that Hovgaard Games reviewed the upload. Workshop authors control their own compatibility claims.

What to do when a mod breaks the game

  1. Exit the game without overwriting your last known-good save if possible.
  2. Disable the most recently enabled mod from the main menu.
  3. Restart and test the separate save.
  4. If the problem remains, unsubscribe from that Workshop item and let Steam update.
  5. Use Steam's file verification for damaged base-game files; do not manually delete broad game folders.
  6. Re-enable other mods one at a time.
  7. Restore the pre-mod save if the affected save still fails.
  8. Report the game version, mod version, reproducible steps, and log requested by the author.

If an unmodded new save also fails, verify the base game before blaming a Workshop item. If only one modified save fails, the mod may have stored data that cannot be removed safely.

For mod creators

Official mod support included sample Unity mods, tools, and an in-game uploader. Start with the current resources linked from official announcements rather than an older unofficial tutorial, because the supported interfaces can change with the game.

Evidence boundary

This page documents the official Workshop route and a conservative test procedure. It does not certify individual mods, blueprints, third-party downloads, or save compatibility. Always give the workshop item's own current instructions priority for that item, and keep a recoverable save from before installation.
